Was it just me or was your mind-blown this year by the gorgeous and so simple Baked Apple Rose that was flying all over the internet?
I came across the video for this recipe and my jaw dropped. A finished apple rose appears so intricate and beautiful and the process of making them is so amazingly easy. It was seriously one of those – why didn’t I think of that? moments. Actually, I’m just happy that someone did!
Puff pastry, apples, your favourite jam, a bit of cinnamon and sugar. No mixing, no rising, no kneading. Just a bit of slicing and rolling and you have a perfectly-portioned dessert that will wow your guests. I have probably made over 50 and I am still wowed each and every time. In the land of desserts – pure genius!
Coming off my recent post for Slovenian-inspired Walnut Potica Cookies, these apple roses were also a nostalgic nod to apple strudel, another traditional favourite in our household growing up. It didn’t occur to me when I first made these but the thinly rolled layers of dough + apple + dough + apple, created a very familiar taste to the apple strudel I grew up with.
These apple roses were the feature dessert for Thanksgiving this year. You can’t help but be impressed when this dessert is placed in front of you. A simple dusting of icing sugar or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream is all it needs to be complete.
At the same time, I’ve also made these as a “grab-and-go” for breakfast and possibly gobbled one up straight from the fridge at 10pm. Hey, I had to know for sure before I added the tip “serve warm or cold” right? All for you my friends, all for you.
The short-list of ingredients and simple instructions for these apple roses makes them a great recipe to try with your kids. There are no mixers or food processors involved and even if they aren’t perfect, they’re still delicious!

- 2 sheets of thawed puff pastry + a bit of flour to roll the dough out with
- 2 red delicious apples
- Juice from half a lemon
- 3-4 tbsp of your favourite jam or jelly
- Cinnamon sugar
- Icing sugar for sprinkling (optional)
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Fill a medium bowl halfway with water and add the lemon juice, set aside.
- Cut the apples in half, core and thinly slice to 1/8" slices. Add the apple slices to the lemon water. Microwave for 3 minutes then drain the water.
- Add the jam and 2 tbsp water into a small dish and microwave for 1 minute.
- Unfold the puff pastry and sprinkle a bit of flour onto the sheet. Using a rolling pin, roll out one sheet at a time until about 1/8" thick. Cut lengthwise into 3 strips per sheet for a total of 6 strips.
- Spread a thin layer of the jam mixture onto a strip. Begin placing the slices of apple (skin out) along one edge of the strip, overlapping one over another. The "curve" of the apple should just peek out over the edge of the dough. Continue along the entire length.
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the apples and dough.
- Fold the bottom of the dough (where no apples slices are) up towards the edge with the apple slices. (see photo)
- Beginning at one end, slowly roll the folded dough to create a spiral. Gently press in the end to secure the rose. (Don't worry too much about this, the muffin cup will keep it together.) Transfer to a generally buttered/non-stick sprayed muffin pan.
- Repeat with remaining strips of puff pastry.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes. Allow to cool in pan for 10-15 minutes before removing.
- Sprinkle with icing sugar before serving (if desired). Can be served warm or cool depending on your preference.
- It's the deep red of a red delicious apple that provides the beautiful colour to these apple roses. Feel free to experiment with different varieties though!
- You can make these a day in advance and just refrigerate before you're ready to bake them.
